Vacancies: One resignation and one replacement hire for a female office worker.
Recruitment: Opening was announced in general circulation newspapers, on our website, on our air, on KWNE Spanish Hour and to public and local college employment offices.
Outreach Efforts (program menu item fulfillment: Management and Staff took part in these activities during the past 12 months:
Station Manager continues his liaison efforts with Ukiah High School;
An effort is underway by counselors, journalism and student activity faculty
to recruit one or more students to intern with our stations this fall.
Station Manager continues to be available to discuss our industry and employment
characteristics with students from the High Schools or the local college.
Station Manager and News Director serve in Ukiah Main Street Program to identify potential new enterprises, educate the employment base and offer consulting in advertising and marketing aspects of business formation.
News Director serves the same function on the Shop Local Project in Ukiah.
Station management has elected to support and encourage interest in performing arts in the community as an effective avenue to attracting youth to broadcast employment. It is clear that many who are talented in the performing arts find their way into broadcasting and youth, women and minorities are attracted to various performing arts activities in our communities.
Station Manager coordinates continuing support for School of Performing Art and Cultural Education (SPACE) through free advertising, fund raising and acknowledgement every month with estimated value of $8,000.
News Director again has volunteered to speak to a Ukiah High School special class on preparing for entering the working world. This program was initialized through the Mendocino County Employers Council and stressed aspects of approaching employers and interviewing including grammar, appearance, etiquette and communication skills. It was structured to attract minorities and more than half the young attendees were minorities.
News Director was again a guest lecturer at Mendocino College Entrepreneurial Business Class July 21 and 28, 2009 on the subject of the marketing and advertising and business and career fields. This class is targeted by the college to attract and advance women and minorities and better than half of attendees are women.
Program Director and News Director attended the Mendocino College Job Fair and discussed broadcast employment with numerous attendees.
Program Director produces a weekly interview series on KWNE which during the
past year featured many performing arts subjects (See public file “Wine
Barrel“) including:
SPACE Scholarships program for underprivileged.
Mendocino College Visual and Performing Arts including their class on Recording
Arts and Recording Technology, their theater presentations and music performances.
Ukiah Playhouse Theater Company’ Heritage and Jazz Music Celebration
Mendocino College Artist in Residence Program supported by Rowland Musical Instrument
Demonstration Road Show.
Ukiah Symphony.
KWNE and KMKX provided free advertising to Mendocino College productions.
Willits Community Theater productions received free advertising and promotion
on our stations.
Public Service Director creates and KWNE airs the weekly hour-long local music program “Home Grown Tones” which nurtures local bands and music artists. The show has been instrumental in finding employment for local musicians in the area, who have gone on to perform at events for the Ukiah Main Street Program, The Mateel Community Center, People Productions, the Ukiah Brewing Company, Shanachie Pub, and various non-profit organizations
KWNE and KMKX are one of three “Major Sponsors” of The Ukiah Symphony Orchestra…four concerts annually.
KWNE and KMKX are one of three “Major Presenter Sponsors” of the Sundays in the Park” free summer concert series and KWNE has been so since its inception 15 years ago…six concerts June-August
KWNE and KMKX grant free advertising to Community Concert Association of Ukiah with visiting world class artist who often volunteer coaching at the local high schools.
Public Service Director helped organize and stage and served as host of Ukiah
Idol August 9 and 11 2009 promoting local talent and helping them find work.

Leadership Mendocino, a select study group seeking to understand and advance
our county, regularly visit our studios to learn about radio and people who
work in it.
